Meet Sandi Leister
When Great Lakes Artworks was founded in 2011, Sandi Leister was one of the principal shareholders. She worked tirelessly to keep the Gallery running smoothly and also took care of all the financial responsibilities.
When Sandi lost her battle with cancer early in 2016, we knew that we wanted to do something to honor her contribution to Great Lakes Artworks and the arts.
In October of 2017, we became Great Lakes Art and Gifts, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit Corporation, so we could assist young artists with encouragement and art supplies.
We formed the Sandi Leister Young Artist Fund, SLYAF, relying on contributions to start feeding the fund. Our goal was to display student's artwork, have the public vote for a winner and present gift certificates for art supplies early each year. We were also depending on the voters to make donations to SLYAF for future awards.
The Covid-19 virus took that opportunity off the table for 2020. We will use that money for future awards.
However, we are in need of operating funds to keep our doors open. After 8+ years of being an Old Town fixture, we really hope we can avoid permanent closure. Not only for GLAG, but for the 30+ Lansing area artists who depend on us.
